Trucking, Transportation and Warehouse Standards

Renlugs’ Ground Shipping Fleet Standards, which includes cargo trucking and warehouses, are designed to integrate with our other cargo and transportation-related standards, including those for trains, airports, and harbors. This assures all parts are in scale and can work seamlessly together in our layouts.

There was a slow shift in scale with vehicles becoming larger around 2005 with the change from “Lego Town” with primarily 4 stud wide vehicles to “Lego City” with primarily 6 stud wide vehicles. You can find exceptions in each line as the scale used by Lego has never been completely consistent.

Our Primary Trucking Fleet

RenLUG’s Larger Tractor Trailer styled trucks are based off the scale of the 6 wide standard for large commercial vehicles, mainly 3221 Lego Truck and the virtually identical 7848 Toys R Us Truck both from 2010. Both are 15″ long; 48 studs in total length and have 32 stud long trailers.

In a flatbed versions, these 32 stud trailers will hold two of our 6×16 stud 20′ in scale intermodal containers or a single 40′ container (32 studs).

Note: There is a new LARGER (18.5″ long x 2.5″ wide x 4″ high) Lego truck for 2024. Set 60440 Lego Delivery Truck. We are currently evaluating how to best incorporate this new larger size in our RenLUG layouts.

Here’s a side by side comparison of the new 2024 60440 Lego Delivery Truck vs the 2010 3221 Lego Truck we adopted as our standard in 2019.

Part substitutions and inspiration from other 6 wide vehicles in a similar scale which includes sets and extending, shortening or changing the styles the trailers is how we get the different looks for our ground shipping fleet. We often shorten the 32 stud trailers to a 16 stud length, as these will still hold one of our 20′ intermodal shipping containers keeping everything in scale. Scale for our purposes is 4 studs = about 5′ (16 studs = 20 ft).

Expanding the fleet to other types of trucks

The 3180 Tank Truck with the Octan branding fits nicely with this scale. It is also from 2010. It measures a little over 11″ long and 3″ tall. A smaller version was released in 2013 as set 60016 Tanker Truck.

7642 Garage from 2009 has an orange wrecker that’s 32 studs / 10″ long. A similar sized wrecker can be found in set 60056 Tow Truck from 2014.

4643 Power Boat Transporter from 2011 and the similar 60254 Race Boat Transporter from 2020 are good examples of how this scale can be used to haul other freight items like boats or farm machines.

4203 Excavator Transport from 2012 with the 34 stud long center drop trailer works especially well with our intermodal containers used in RenLUG’s train and harbour setups. This drop trailer design will carry one of our 20′ intermodal shipping containers.

7686 Helicopter Transporter used the 34 stud center drop train bed as a trailer. 60138 Heavy Cargo Transport from 2018 is also 48 studs total length at 15″ long.

60305 Car Transporter from 2021. There is also a new one 60408 Car Transporter being released in 2024 that appears to be in a similar scale.

60388 Gaming Tournament Truck from 2023. This novelty truck is 13″ long.

Other Cab Styles

The 2148 Lego Truck from 1997 and the identical 10156 Lego Truck from 2004, along with & the 3442 Legoland California Truck of the same design provide a smaller cab that works well with shorter length trailers. The drivers compartment is 4 wide, the sleeper extends it to 6 wide. Jangbricks has a good comparison of the Lego branded trucks.

These are smaller scale cabs that are similar in scale to the ones from the Cargo Airport vehicles. These work well on city roads and warehouse lots that dont have large loading docks.
