What is RenLUG?

RenLUG stands for “Renaissance LEGO User Group.” We are an organization of Adult Fans of Lego (AFOLs) who educate the community, children & adults, in designing with mathematically based media that inspires STEM education, social & critical thinking skills, artistic creativity & dexterity, via public events & outreach.

RenLUG is an inclusive group that welcomes and values members from diverse backgrounds, including the LGBTQ+ community.

RenLUG Membership Policy and Engagement Guide can be found here.

What do you do?

Our main objective is to unite local Adult Fans of LEGO (AFOL) and foster a community centered around their passion for the hobby in the Central Florida area, primarily Seminole, Orange, and Lake Counties.

We believe in giving back to the community that supports us and you can often find RenLUG members volunteering and having fun together at various community events.

RenLUG meetings serve as a platform for discussing various aspects of LEGO, including building, displaying, collecting, bargain hunting, ongoing projects, and virtually anything else related to LEGO that comes to mind. We host monthly gatherings, where members convene to discuss upcoming events, showcase their creations, parts drafts, and occasionally engage in friendly building competitions. Moreover, we organize public workshops and build events, along with exhibitions of our collective creations multiple times annually.

How do I become a member of the AFOL Club?

Is there a cost?

Apart from the expense of purchasing your own LEGO bricks for your builds or buying into the optional parts drafts, we don’t require any yearly membership fees. RenLUG name badges and shirts are required for certain public facing events. We strive to keep these costs low for our members.

Donations are appreciated in any amount to cover the costs of meeting rooms, website, advertising materials, and similar expenses the group incurs. If there is ever a time where these costs weren’t covered by our generous members or other methods, we would need to enact a membership dues system to cover that. We have not needed to and don’t expect to need to take this step.

There may be personal expenses related to travel, accommodations, food, and parking for certain events and fan conventions. We strive to keep these additional costs low by operating in a defined local area – Seminole, Orange, and Lake County, Florida.

Can my child join?

RenLUG welcomes teenagers aged 15 and above to join as Teen Fans of LEGO (TFOL) members. However, TFOLs must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all LUG meetings until they reach the age of 16. After TFOLs have reached the age of 16 and have regularly participated for at least a 6 months without incident, they can request that the parent requirement be waived for general meetings and RenLUG hosted workshops. All minors, under 18, must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all public displays.

We have activities for younger kids! RenLUG hosts a variety of public workshops and exhibition style events for ALL ages. Many of these are perfect for younger LEGO builders. You can find the list of public RenLUG events under our “events & meetings” tab or in our Facebook Group.

Can I display with RenLUG at events?

All RenLUG AFOL Club members have the ability to display at our events. In our newsletters, there is a simple request form to fill in with details about your display needs; the member coordinating the event will add it to the layout plan for the show. All displays, whether by members or non-members, must adhere to our RenLUG Code of Conduct, which promotes inclusivity and shared LEGO values and prohibits the inclusion of profanity, sexual content, politically controversial themes, or any form of discrimination in builds showcased to the general public.

What is a parts draft?

A set draft involves the LUG opening multiple new copies of the same set and organizing all elements by color and type. Members participating in the draft then draw random numbers to determine the order of selecting pieces. When it’s their turn, they can choose all elements of a single type or a minifigure from the available selection. Members can either provide their own copy of the set or contribute to a collective pool by acquiring them, with a buy-in charged for participation.
