Florida’s only LUG-Operated Gravity LEGO® Track!
Hands-on LEGO® STEM fun for builders, students, scouts, and families across Central Florida.
🏁 Recognized with the Maker of Merit Award at Maker Faire Orlando 2025
What Is RenLUG Royal Rally Racing?
Royal Rally Racing is RenLUG’s gravity-powered LEGO® car racing program — one of Central Florida’s most distinctive interactive STEM experiences. Launched in 2024 and built on RenLUG’s founding roots in FIRST robotics and STEM outreach, the program brings engineering, physics, and creative problem-solving to life through the universal language of LEGO® and the thrill of a race.
The track itself is a professional-grade 35-foot, 3-lane Best Track brand Pinewood Derby racing system — the same equipment used in official Pinewood Derby competitions — running custom LEGO®-built cars. An optional loop or truck extension can be added for events where space and audience call for something extra. Fast, loud, and genuinely exciting for all ages.
RenLUG Royal Rally Racing is Florida’s only LUG-operated gravity LEGO® racing program. There is nothing else like it in the state.

How It Works
- Build Your Racer — Design a gravity-powered LEGO® car from available bricks and specialty parts.
- Test & Tweak — Adjust weight, aerodynamics, and wheel placement for maximum speed or distance.
- Race Time! — Launch cars down the RenLUG Royal Rally track and see who wins.
- Learn & Iterate — Refine your design, race again, and explore the STEM concepts behind every choice.
📋 Track Your Progress — The Royal Rally Racing Card
Every racer receives a Royal Rally Racing card — a keepsake driver’s license on one side and a personal data log on the other. Name, date, blocks used, and up to six run times recorded in the racer’s own hand. That’s not just a souvenir — it’s a personal engineering dataset. How did weight affect speed? Did more blocks help or hurt? Participants leave with documented evidence of their own design process, and the answer to those questions written in their own handwriting.

Key Features:
- Open to builders of all ages and skill levels
- Teaches engineering, physics, and design principles
- Hosted at schools, libraries, museums, scout events, and community programs
Event Highlights:
- Interactive STEM Learning – Explore physics, engineering, design, and problem-solving
- Custom LEGO® Cars – Participants build their own LEGO® racers
- Scout-Friendly Racing – LEGO® or traditional Pinewood Derby cars can race down the Royal Rally track
- Awards & Recognition – Prizes options for speed, distance, design creativity, and innovation
- Community Fun – Encourages collaboration, learning, and social engagement across all ages
The digital scoreboard tracks times and results — so every race is official.

🏎️ From LEGO® Gravity Cars to Formula 1 — The Engineering Is the Same
Every Royal Rally Racing participant is doing what Formula 1 engineers do: design a vehicle, make choices about weight and shape, test it against real-world physics, analyze the results, and iterate. The scale is different. The principles aren’t.
F1 is one of the most engineering-intensive sports on earth — and it starts with exactly the kind of question a Royal Rally Racing builder asks at the start line: what would make this faster? Weight distribution, center of gravity, drag, rolling resistance — these aren’t abstract concepts when you’re holding your car at the top of a 35-foot track about to find out if your theory was right.
RenLUG celebrates the connection between LEGO® building and real-world engineering — including the engineering that defines Formula 1. Watch for F1-themed builds and displays at select RenLUG events, and follow us on Instagram and Facebook where we tag current LEGO® themes including #LEGOF1 and #Formula1.
Who Can Participate
RenLUG Royal Rally Racing is designed for public events and community programs — open to all ages, no experience required.
Libraries & Community Events — Interactive public programming that draws crowds and keeps participants engaged across all age groups. Our most common and highest-impact use of the track.
Schools & Homeschool Groups — Hands-on STEM learning through LEGO® engineering challenges. STEM facilitation and learning guides provided; full curriculum currently in development.
Scouts — The Royal Rally track is fully compatible with traditional Pinewood Derby cars, making it a natural fit for scout troops. If a scout shows up with a Pinewood Derby car at any RenLUG event, we’ll race it.
Science Centers & Museums — Interactive programming that complements existing STEM exhibits and brings repeat visitors back.
Corporate & Community Groups — Team-building and creative workshops using LEGO® engineering challenges.
Adult Learners & Lifelong Builders — Royal Rally Racing isn’t just for kids. Adult participants engage with the same engineering principles — weight distribution, center of gravity, aerodynamic drag — that professional designers apply to real-world vehicles. Whether you’re an engineer, an educator, or simply someone who never outgrew the thrill of building something and watching it fly, the design challenge is genuinely interesting at any age and experience level. RenLUG’s own adult members continue to discover new approaches every time the track runs.
